Winston-Salem Roofing: What to Do When You Find a Leak

Horizon Roofing and Restoration works throughout Winston-Salem. Most of the calls we take start the same way — somebody has just noticed a stain on a ceiling and doesn’t know whether it’s an emergency or something that can wait until Monday. This page is mostly about that first hour, because what you do in it makes a real difference to what the repair ends up costing.

The first hour after a leak in Winston-Salem, NC

Start inside rather than outside. Put something under the drip, and if the ceiling is bulging or sagging, that’s water pooling above the drywall — piercing it deliberately with a small hole lets it drain in one place instead of bringing the ceiling down across the room. It feels wrong and it’s the right thing to do.

Move what you can out of the way, and photograph everything before you clean anything up. If a claim follows, those first photographs are worth more than anything taken later, because they show the damage before anyone touched it.

Then stay off the roof. A wet roof is genuinely dangerous, and in the dark or in wind it’s worse. Whatever is happening up there will keep until someone with the right equipment can look properly, and a fall costs far more than a ceiling.

Call it in the same day even if the rain has stopped, and say plainly whether water is still coming in. A roof that’s actively letting water through gets treated differently from one that can wait for a slot in the schedule, and we’d rather know which one you have. The stain on your ceiling is often some distance from where the water is actually getting in, so finding the source is a job in itself.

How we help in Winston-Salem, NC

A Charlotte, NC home that recently got a new roof through an insurance claim

Storm damage and insurance claims

Storm damage and a slow leak are different problems and get handled differently. After a storm, the question is what the weather did and whether it adds up to a claim. Hail bruises the shingle mat and leaves very little you could see from the ground.

We’re a local company serving the Carolinas. We’ll inspect, photograph what we find slope by slope, and work through the scope with your insurance carrier if there’s a claim in it. If there isn’t, we’ll say so and quote the repair instead of filing for the sake of it.

Standard Roof Replacements

Plenty of Winston-Salem leaks turn out to be one failed detail on a roof with years left in it — a valley, flashing at a chimney, a split boot around a vent stack. That’s a repair, and it doesn’t go near an insurance company.

When a roof genuinely is finished, we measure with Eagleview satellite imagery and Xactimate software so the estimate reflects your actual roof rather than an approximation, and we’ll be straight with you about how long the work should take.

Gutters and Gutter Guards

Overflowing gutters are behind a surprising share of the leaks we get called to, because water backing up over the edge runs behind the fascia instead of away from it. If you’ve just had a leak and your gutters were full, those two facts are probably connected. We can install 5” or 6” K-style gutters in a variety of colors designed to complement your roof and house.

Guards are worth considering where there are limbs over the roof. We’ll look at what’s actually dropping before we recommend a type.

What to Do the Day You Find a Leak

The short version, in order.

Contain it. A bucket, a towel, and anything valuable moved clear. If the ceiling is bulging, drain it deliberately through one small hole rather than letting it give way on its own.

Photograph it. Before you mop anything up, take pictures of the ceiling, the walls, the floor and anything damaged. If this turns into a claim, that’s your best evidence, and nobody ever regrets having too many photographs.

Don’t go up. Not in the rain, not in the dark, not to have a quick look. Wet roofs are how people get badly hurt, and there is nothing you could do up there tonight that can’t wait.

Call the same day and say whether water is still coming in. That one sentence decides whether this is an emergency or a scheduled visit, and it means we turn up with the right thing on the truck.

Once we’re there, finding the actual entry point is the real work. Water travels along rafters and decking before it drops, so the stain on your ceiling is often several feet from the hole. We’ll also replace fascia, soffit, trim and molding that have rotted with PVC while we’re fixing what caused it.

Leak and roofing questions in Winston-Salem, NC

Not always. Plumbing, condensation on ductwork, and a poorly vented bathroom fan all produce stains that look exactly like a roof leak from below. That’s worth knowing before you spend money on a roof that may not be the problem. We’ll work out which it is, and if it turns out to be plumbing we’ll tell you so rather than sell you a roof.

Please don’t. A wet roof is genuinely dangerous and a tarp put on badly can channel water somewhere worse than where it was going. Contain the water inside, photograph it, and call. Whatever is happening up there will hold until someone can get on it safely.

Yes. A leak that stops isn’t a leak that’s fixed — it’s a leak waiting for the next storm, and in the meantime the water that got in is sitting in insulation and decking where it does its damage quietly. It’s also much easier to find the entry point while the evidence is fresh. The inspection costs nothing.
